A Michigan cannabis company is being forced to surrender its adult-use cannabis license as part of a consent order with the state after an investigation found the company sold pounds of cannabis directly from the store vault and sold recalled products that had been placed on administrative hold. 

According to two separate complaints from employees, one of the owners of Unique Farms LLC, which operates as Zaza Recreational, was found in May to have brought two people into the dispensary “to purchase pounds of cannabis directly from the store vault.” A state Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) investigation uncovered that the business owners had advertised “Bulk Pounds Now Available” at the dispensary and a variety of other security violations, including unlocked doors, broken locks, and unsecured products. Video provided to the regulators also did not include key recordings from the exterior, vault, or hallway, according to the complaint.    

The CRA also found that the owners sold recalled cannabis, including 13 batches of one unidentified product for 0.13 cents. One of the managers told regulators that the items had been destroyed but could not provide evidence of the destruction, according to the complaint. Another 11 products, not associated with the recall, were also found to have been “pennied out.” During the investigation, CRA found discrepancies with the dispensary surveillance system, including with the cameras’ calibrated time. 

Unique Farms agreed to cease all operations and permanently close on August 7, 2026 with no possibility that the license will be renewed, reinstated, reissued, reactivated, or otherwise restored in the future. The company also must reconcile all inventory in the statewide monitoring system before surrendering the license. Unique Farms did not contest the allegations and waived its right to an administrative hearing.
