Medical cannabis in North Dakota
Medical cannabis is legal in North Dakota for patients with a doctor’s recommendation. Patients can possess up to three ounces of cannabis flower sourced from licensed dispensaries, but home grows are not allowed.
Slow-moving reforms
North Dakota lawmakers approved minor cannabis reforms in 2019 making it the 25th state to eliminate jail time for low-level cannabis possession.
Recent polling suggests a slight majority of North Dakota residents support legalizing adult-use cannabis. Activists are looking ahead to a 2022 legalization ballot initiative.
In 2021, House lawmakers passed a cannabis legalization bill in an attempt to preempt the voter ballot initiative process, which would likely result in more progressive reforms. That effort, however, later failed in the Senate.
