Cannabis legalization in South Dakota
South Dakota made history in 2020 as the first state to approve both medical and adult-use cannabis reforms in the same election. But, while the state’s medical cannabis reforms have advanced since then, its adult-use ballot initiative was overturned by a South Dakota judge after being legally challenged by law enforcement at the behest of Gov. Kristi Noem (R).

Despite its foot-dragging on adult-use reforms, the South Dakota government was working to implement its medical cannabis system within months of the program’s passage. The government has not yet announced details on the process for getting a medical cannabis ID but officials say that information will be available by late 2021.
