Rhode Island cannabis reforms

Rhode Island became the 11th state to legalize medical cannabis in 2006 but the Legislature did not approve a system of licensed retailers until 2009. Bills to legalize adult-use cannabis are proposed each year but have yet to gain much traction among lawmakers.

Rhode Island medical cannabis program

To qualify for the Rhode Island medical cannabis program, patients must have a doctor’s recommendation and be treating one of the following debilitative qualifying conditions: cancer, glaucoma, positive status for HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis C, or a chronic/debilitating disease that causes cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe and/or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, and agitation related to Alzheimer’s Disease.
