What Is a Cannabis Concentrate?

At its most fundamental, a cannabis concentrate is exactly what the name implies: cannabis made more concentrated. The extraction process separates precious terpenes and cannabinoids like THC and CBD from the plant material, leaving behind a concentrated and powerful end product. Where a top-shelf flower might test at 25–30% THC, a cannabis concentrate is highly potent, with cannabinoid percentages ranging anywhere from 40% to 90% THC. The difference in effect is not merely quantitative — the removal of excess plant material also allows flavor compounds to shine in ways that combusted flower simply cannot replicate.

The terms “concentrate” and “extract” are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinction: concentrates refer to any type of concentrated cannabis product, while extracts are concentrates created through solvent-based extraction. Kief shaken from a grinder is a concentrate. Solvent-pulled shatter is both a concentrate and an extract. Understanding this difference helps navigate the increasingly sophisticated menu at any well-stocked dispensary.

A History Older Than Any Dispensary

While the origins of cannabis concentrates remain unclear, they have been used by humanity for more than 1,000 years. The first concentrate ever made was charas, obtained by rubbing fresh flowers with naked hands — a technique still practiced in the foothills of the Hindu Kush and across South Asia today. Hashish was being used during the 10th century in the Middle East, though whether it originated there or in Central Asia — what is now Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and surrounding regions — remains debated.

The cultural spread of hashish is inseparable from the spread of Islam and trade routes across Asia and North Africa. Legend has it that assassins from the Hassan-i Sabbāh sect used hashish to recruit members, as described in Marco Polo’s writings — a story that linked the word “hashish” etymologically to the word “assassin,” however apocryphal the tale may be. During the 1960s and 1970s, hashish gained popularity in the Western world through countercultural movements. Cannabis enthusiasts began experimenting with new extraction methods, paving the way for modern techniques. The Western fascination with hash also contributed to an influx of imports from producing nations like Morocco, Afghanistan, and Lebanon, fostering a global appreciation for cannabis concentrates.

By the 1940s and 1950s, crude forms of “hash oil” appeared in the West, typically made with ethanol or other simple solvents. The solvent-based approach would not reach mainstream cannabis culture until decades later. The origins of today’s BHO concentrates can be traced back to D. Gold’s 1971 book Cannabis Alchemy: The Art of Modern Hashmaking, which described a solvent-based process used to make concentrates. The prevalence of BHO extraction boomed in the late 1990s with the advent of the internet. A 1991 article published on Erowid, an online database for psychoactive compounds, also described the making of the popular hash oil.

BHO first emerged in the 1990s and early 2000s, primarily through DIY methods shared among cannabis enthusiasts online. Early recipes for making “honey oil” with butane circulated on internet forums like Overgrow and Erowid, sparking interest in solvent-based cannabis extraction. By the 1990s, underground cannabis communities refined extraction techniques, developing safer and more efficient methods. Early adopters began to recognize the potential of concentrates for a more potent high, and the clandestine nature of these operations led to a tight-knit community of extractors who shared techniques and knowledge in secrecy.

A landmark moment arrived in 2013. One of the most significant milestones in concentrate history came when “Kind Bill” and “Giddy Up” created live resin. By utilizing fresh-frozen cannabis instead of cured material, they preserved the delicate cannabinoids and terpenes in their most vibrant form, resulting in a flavorful and aromatic extract that set the gold standard for quality and became a favorite among connoisseurs.

Two Roads: Solvent-Based and Solventless

Every concentrate produced today falls into one of two broad camps, and understanding the difference is the first step to navigating the category intelligently.

Solvent-Based Extraction

Solvent-based concentrates are made using butane (BHO), ethanol, methanol, or CO2 to extract cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds from marijuana trichomes. Each solvent has its own personality. Ethanol extraction is one of the most efficient methods for processing large batches of cannabis flower and can be done in hot, cold, or room temperature conditions. Hydrocarbon extraction using butane or propane, by contrast, is prized for its terpene retention. As one industry expert noted, “butane/propane extraction has a lower throughput than ethanol but enables the processor to capture all major terpenes and cannabinoids in one operation.”

Today, licensed labs use closed-loop extraction systems, making BHO safer, more consistent, and highly regulated. The days of backyard “open blasting” — pointing a can of butane through a PVC tube — have largely given way to purpose-built stainless-steel closed-loop systems operating inside ventilated, fire-rated facilities. The final form of a solvent-based concentrate depends heavily on post-processing: temperature, agitation, vacuum purging, and time all shape whether the result is shatter, wax, budder, crumble, or sauce.

Solventless Extraction

Hand-pressed hashes, developed many centuries ago, are the earliest forms of solventless concentrates. Solventless extraction methods do not use chemical solvents to reap the plant’s natural oils; instead, they use a variety of agitation techniques and machines that use heat and pressure to separate the resin from the plant.

Rosin tech is a solventless extraction method that uses heat and pressure to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis flowers or hash, popular for its simplicity and ability to produce high-quality concentrates without additional solvents. Ice water extraction (which yields bubble hash) works on a different principle: it involves submerging cannabis material in a mixture of ice and water in a series of mesh bags, and when agitated, the cold water makes it easy to break the trichomes, which fall to the bottom for collection. Solventless concentrates are becoming more common because of their purity, natural flavor profiles, and perceived safety.

A Taxonomy of Forms

There are many differences between the various types of concentrates, including texture, taste, color, and extraction process. Many categories of cannabis concentrates are primarily defined by their final form. Here is a quick map of the major players:

  • Shatter: A clear extract, the texture of which ranges from snappy and toffee-like to brittle and glass-like.
  • Wax / Budder: Has a much softer consistency than shatter, ranging in texture from soft icing to creamy budder to sticky candle wax.
  • Live Resin: Made from fresh-frozen cannabis. Manufacturers flash-freeze the plants immediately after harvest, then use a solvent extraction process to dissolve the trichomes while leaving behind the active compounds.
  • Rosin: The preferred choice for the cannabis purist. Made without the use of any solvents, rosin tastes like the buds it was pressed from, but with a deeper flavor and stronger effect.
  • Diamonds: THC diamonds can contain up to 99% pure THC, making them one of the most potent concentrates. The creation process begins by extracting live resin from cannabis plants, then purifying it through chromatography before manufacturers slowly heat the refined extract until it forms diamond-like crystals.
  • Bubble Hash: A solvent-free concentrate made by agitating cannabis trichomes with cold water and ice in bubble bags.
  • Kief: More commonly known as dry sift, this solventless concentrate is created by dry-sieving plant matter through various screens.

How Concentrates Are Consumed

The concentrate world has its own purpose-built hardware ecosystem. The most common consumption method is dabbing from a rig — a glass or silicone, bong-like water filtration device used most commonly when consuming dabs. Heat is applied to a “banger” or nail, and a small amount of concentrate is dropped onto the hot surface, instantly vaporizing. Portable dab vaporizers have brought dabs to a wider audience by offering a discreet, on-the-go experience, transforming dabbing from a niche activity into a mainstream option. Compact and easy to use, portable vaporizers cater to those who want a quick, efficient, and mess-free way to enjoy concentrates.

Beyond dedicated rigs and vapes, concentrates can be incorporated into more traditional formats. Live resin is commonly found in vape cartridges or “dab pens” for a more portable and discreet option, or it can be “twaxed” by adding it to a joint or bowl of flower to boost potency. A snake of wax rolled into the center of a joint, a line of kief sprinkled across a bowl — concentrates have always found their way into whatever format a smoker has at hand.

The cultural shorthand for the concentrate world is “710,” a nod to the number that spells “OIL” when read upside down and backwards — the extract world’s equivalent of “420.”

The Concentrate Market Today

Cannabis concentrates remain one of the industry’s most innovative categories. The concentrates segment dominated the cannabis market and is estimated to register a CAGR of 15% during the forecast period. As consumer tastes have evolved in the modern cannabis industry, so too have the extraction methods. HTFSE (High Terpene Full Spectrum Extract) emerged with demand for concentrates rich in flavor — a new wave of extraction technology focusing not on cannabinoid potency but on terpene preservation, since conventional extraction methods can destroy most volatile terpenes through harsh, high-heat environments.
