What Is a Carb Cap?

That accidental discovery — covering the nail with a fingertip and noticing how dramatically the dab improved — planted the seed for what would become one of the most important accessories in the concentrate world.
Task Rok, the man behind dab accessories company Highly Educated, took the concept and commercialized it. The earliest incarnations started as a drawing on the back of a cardboard box in July 2013, and the next day he introduced the first production prototypes to the world via an Instagram post. Exactly a month later, they were available wholesale, and Highly Educated had officially introduced the carb cap to the world of dabs.
Interestingly, the carb cap wasn’t a huge hit when it was first introduced to the market. Many thought of it as a trendy device that didn’t really offer a significant improvement over existing options. That skepticism didn’t last long. Over time, the carb cap caught on and started garnering attention as more and more people realized the superior dabbing experience it provides. Today, carb caps are considered essential dabbing tools.
From its titanium roots, it didn’t take long for carb caps to start being crafted out of the fine borosilicate glass being used to make the world’s best pipes for years. The material expansion opened the door for glass artists to treat the carb cap as a canvas, and the accessory quickly became as much a collector’s item as a functional tool.
The Physics: How a Carb Cap Actually Works

Materials
Carb caps can be made from several different materials, and the one you choose can affect everything from heat retention to durability to flavor. Borosilicate glass is one of the most popular choices — heat-resistant, easy to clean, and it doesn’t affect flavor. Glass caps come in a huge variety of shapes and styles, and many people love them for the clean aesthetic and pure-tasting hits. Most caps are quartz, which is flavorless, durable, and easy to clean. Titanium caps are extremely durable but can impart a metallic taste. Ceramic caps offer excellent heat retention and won’t get as hot to the touch, but are more fragile.
