Cannabis Terminology 101

Marijuana, weed, ganja, grass, dope, dro, etc.: there is no shortage of names for everyone’s favorite plant. The prevalence of these different names may be due in part to the prohibition of cannabis in the U.S. and around the world, which was often a politically-motivated and racially-targeted decision to outlaw behaviors that were common among populations that the government wanted to control. Once it became illegal, people would have needed to obscure their references to cannabis in order to hide the fact that they consumed / grew / sold it, and these names would need to evolve over time as they became well-known by the authorities.

Another potential reason for why there are so many different words for “marijuana” is that smoking weed often leads to talking about weed, which often leads to coming up with unique nicknames and descriptions for how the weed makes you feel… in other words, it’s like a self-replicating fractal, man.

Mary Jane has many aliases, and much like Carmen San Diego, trying to find her when you’re traveling the world can be difficult if you don’t speak the local language. Luckily, we’ve compiled some of the most (and least) common nicknames that cannabis goes by. Some are regional, some are classical, but all of them mean the same thing.

Popular in this category:
Dagga

Dagga

A South African word from marijuana that dates back to the 1600s. The term originates from the Khoekhoe language and indigenous tribe from South-Eastern Africa. In this dialect, the term also means ‘a feeling of intoxication’. Since the word has been adopted it has been spelled many different ways including daggha, dacha, dacka, tagga, and dachka.

Chronic

Chronic

While Chronic is the name of a specific hybrid strain, stoners use it as a slang term for exceptionally strong cannabis. The definition even differed depending on your location: East Coast dwellers used “chronic” to refer to cannabis laced with cocaine, while the West Coast used it to describe high-quality weed. The ‘90s West Coast rap scene cemented the latter meaning as definitive with Dr. Dre’s beloved triple platinum album The Chronic and sextuple platinum Chronic 2001.

Cheeba

Cheeba

Common term for cannabis, traditionally in flower form. Not to be confused with the actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba, or the city in Japan. It derives from the Spanish “Chiva,” the term for heroin, but Brazillian stoners soon adapted it as slang for weed. Cheeba Chews, a brand of potent, weed-infused taffy available in Colorado, California, Nevada, and Oklahoma were named after this popular term.

Bud

Bud

A common term for cannabis in general, but also used more specifically to refer to the smokable flowers of the cannabis plant. It’s often grown and distributed in smallish, fragrant clumps. These are usually ground by the consumer and smoked, but after grinding they can also be decarbed to make edibles and other goodies.

Stoner Terms & Phrases

The “stoner” stereotype has been aggressively pushed in mainstream media for decades, both by proponents and detractors of cannabis. In reality, the effects of cannabis use vary from person to person, but that fact didn’t stop legions of stonified slang terms and references from getting couch-locked in mainstream culture.

Popular in this category:
Edibles

Edibles

Cannabis-infused food or drink. People find edibles more convenient than combustion or vaporizing for many reasons including knowing how much THC is consumed (something especially important for medical users), it’s easier on the lungs, and edibles tend to be more potent. Some find edibles tricky, however, due to the length of time, they take to kick in. Due to digestion and the varying absorption from person to person, edibles can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours to reach their full effects.

Toke Up

Toke Up

The act of smoking cannabis, usually in joint form, that results in getting high. “Toke” started popping up in the 1950s, and it likely comes from the spanish verb tocar, which roughly means “to touch,” implying a small amount of cannabis is being consumed. This phrase isn’t as common as it used to be, but it’s a great way to describe having a puff or two off a joint.

Shotgunning

Shotgunning

The act of inhaling cannabis smoke or vapor before putting your lips to another person’s and exhaling the cannabis smoke directly into their mouth. The recipient will then inhale the smoke and both parties will get high from the one hit. This is often seen as a romantic gesture, or at the very least one signifying closeness between the participants.

Tatered

Tatered

A word used to describe how inebriated one can get from smoking weed. It’s possible that being tatered may be related to the term couch potato, referencing the couch lock often experienced when smoking heavy Indica strains, but this isn’t proven. Either way, to be tatered is to be exceptionally stoned.
